5 Stars Rating Can Be Deceptive! How to Spot Fake Online Reviews?

Fake online user reviews can make you shop wrong or inferior product. This is why you should learn how to identify fake reviews to ensure a good online buying.

(Fake reviews are to the customers what cyber threats are to the businesses in Singapore. Both lead to frustration, loss and regret.)

Are you going to buy a new product online?

Like a savvy customer, you must have checked its reviews. Right?

After all, reviews give an idea about the quality and performance of a certain product. From satisfaction to disappointment, the customer’s reactions are usually varied for the products.Checking other customers’ feedback just increases your buying confidence.

But you shouldn’t blindly trust all customer reviews. This is because some reviews, which are usually positive, are fabricated or fake in order to build a positive image of the product.

May be a 5 stars rating for a hair dryer or plenty of positive reviews for a mobile phone is not true.

By trusting fake reviews, you can end up buying inferior product which later leads to your regret. Therefore, you should be careful while reading customer reviews.

And it is even important as nearly 60% Singaporean shop online (at least once a month).

Here we have helped you spotting fake online reviews.

RED FLAG # 1: The Review is Not Detailed:

Most fake reviews either brag about the products or come up with a blunt criticism, without anysolid reason. In simple words, these reviews lack reason why the particular product is good or bad. The tone is typically extreme.

For example, have a look at this review about a smartphone…

“Superb and beautiful phone! Best one I’ve ever purchased.”

The reviewer hasn’t mentioned that why the certain phone is superb or what features make it his best purchase ever. It is usually high on the adjectives like best, wonderful, and superb rather than stressing facts or experience. In fact, science has proved a person who is lying, tend to use personal pronouns.

A genuine review reflects user’s experience with the product and covers all the reason that makes the product good or poor. One more thing—a real review is likely to be moderate in the tone.

RED FLAG # 2: Similar Reviews across Several Websites:

You must have come across plenty of similar reviews while researching a product across several websites. Most of these reviews might have similar word groupings and writing style.

It simply means that the information is either being copied or the same person has written them all.

Most reviewers are paid for creating fake reviews to be spread across the websites. Like we said in the previous point, most fake reviews are full of adjectives rather than useful details. Most fake reviews may be posted with the same author’s name across several platforms.

(Tip: Highlight a sentence, copy it and paste into your search engine’s search bar. Press Enter. If you see exact sentences have been used on a number other sites (even it is for different products, this tells that the review is fake.)

RED FLAG # 3: Large Chunk of Reviewsover a Short Period of Time:

If a new product gets thousands of positive reviews in a short span of time (for example, 30 minutes), chances are these reviews are fake.

These reviews are created by bogus critics or paid reviewers to create hype for promotional gain.

RED FLAG # 4: Short and Sloppy:

Other sign of fake reviews is that they are short, repetitive and sloppy. This is because fake reviewers are paid little per review. To make a large earning, they are likely to write quickly and in established form of words. It leads to the reviews being marked with typos, slangs, and lack of punctuation and above all, extreme brevity.

RED FLAG # 5: Repeating or Saying the Entire Name Over and Over:

One more sign to identify a fake product review. A fake review mill can use product name several times across the sentences to improve the SEO visibility of the company. For example,

“The amazing features of ABC Printer 1400X are the best I’ve ever seen. I never want to print any of my documents without ABC Printer 1400X. ABC Printer 1400X is easy to use and doesn’t add to your electricity bill.”

By mentioning the same name of the excessively in the reviews across the separate sites, many marketers try to manipulate the search results.

Bottom Line:

You must have understood how to spot fake reviews. However, you should be proactive as bogus reviews can look like original in coming years. The best way to combat fake reviews is to shop from trusted websites and use (Google Search) Internet for anything suspicious.

ATTENTION! Why Businesses in Singapore Are Prone to Cyber Attacks

Why businesses in Singapore are threatened by the ever growing cyber-attacks? What to do? Find out here…

Remember WannaCry? Remember Messiah? Remember Petya Ransomware?

These are some deadly computer viruses that took down thousands of businesses in Singapore the time they broke out.

From leaking information, locking out the users of their PC to corrupting the databases, they have done severe damages to the companies across the island and worldwide as well.

Consider yourself lucky if your business survived the attack or remain unaffected, but for how long?

Your business can be the next target. Why?

Singapore is one of the vulnerable nations to cybercrimes. Singapore Cyber Landscape found that cybercrimes rate was nearly doubled from previous year, as it was up from 7.9 per cent to 13.7 percent. In 2016, the Singapore Government revealed that the nation faces more than one cyber-attack per month.

According to Asia Pacific Defence Outlook 2016 by Deloitte, Singapore is nine times more vulnerable to cyber attacks.

Therefore, you shouldn’t overlook the cyber-attacks.

Why cyber crimes rate have been on the rise in Singapore? Despite being Asia’s tech hub, why businesses in Singapore are on the radar of cyber criminals?

Reasons Singapore Businesses Become Target of Cyber Attacks

Lack of Investment in Security Measures:

Many companies are not taking cyber security seriously, despite the potential threats. According to a Quann IT Security End User Study 2017, most businesses in Singapore are not making investment in cyber security measures like device deployment, professional services, cyber awareness and resources for attacks.

Businesses need to recognize the value of comprehensive security plan, solid processes and detection system to detect the threats early and minimise their risk.

Having No Security Features to Detect and Monitor the Attack:

Although most Singapore companies use firewall and antivirus, over half of them lack robust security measures to deal with sophisticated attack, according to Quann. The study further says that they lack advanced security features like SOC or dedicated team to monitor, analyse and respond to the attack.

Having the Highest Internet Penetration Rate:

Singapore is on the way to become the next big tech hub of the world. 90% people have smartphone due to overwhelming Internet speed and government support for IT sector.

On the flip side, the ever increasing Internet penetration rate has attracted the eyes of cyber criminals. For example, people rely on their smartphones for making even nominal payment without caring for the basic security standards or paying platform. As everything is on the Internet, it takes a hacker to break some simple codes to get access to your info.

Being the Launchpad for Cyber Attacks:

Singapore has become the most favourable place to launch a cyber-attack, according to Check Point Software Technologies, an Israeli security firm. This is because much of the internet traffic is delivered from other countries. It means that a cyber-attack being delivered from Singapore might have been launched outside the nation.

Cyber Security—It is As Important as Your Business Practices

Given the ever growing rate of cybercrimes in Singapore, cybersecurity is more important than anything else. It is a need of hour to protect your valuable data, detect malware and threat and monitor the functions. These dos and don’ts help you reinforce the cyber security of your business.

Do’s

Drones for Singaporean Photographers: Everything They Should Know

Looking for a spectacular aerial shot? What about drone photography? And buying drone won’t hurt your budget. Learn here the benefits, buying guide and laws about drones in Singapore.)

These days, technology has advance to every field whether it be in education in the form of Flipped Classroom or uses of Apps for business growth and now in the field of photography.

Once taking an aerial shot meant that a photographer would have to climb a skyscraper or board a helicopter. Apart from these ways, some photographers used the hacks like kite photography or pigeon to fulfil a task.

However, most of these ways were either expensive or inconvenient, restricting the aerial shots to expensive projects.

But time has changed now. Taking shots from the sky is no more a luxury.

Whether you are a hobbyist or a professional photographer, you can take aerial shot easily without having to resort to any past method. Just stay on the land and use a remote control to capture the shots from desired angles. And the flying machine will do the job for you.

Any guesses?

Yeah, we are talking about photography with drones.

Drones are autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle which look like a toy quadcopter. Being controlled by a remote, they are used on a large scale to capture still images and video from hundreds of feet above the ground from unique viewpoints.

This way drones have given the wing to the photographer’s imagination.

So here will walk through the benefits of drone photography along with the tips for choosing the right one, cost and drone laws in Singapore.

First of all,

Let’s Find Out How Using A Drone Can Give You A Perfect Shot:

1) An Ease of Taking the Shot from Anywhere:

Drone can fly into the areas that were not so accessible before. For example, drones enable you to capture the ocean from bird’s eye-view or survey the kilometres of land. Apart from recreational use, drone can be really useful in case of emergency—to assess a building on fire or mapping earthquake zones.

2) Giving You Stunning Aerial Photography:

How to Choose the Right Drone for You?

It is important to choose the right drone for your aerial photography. This is because drones are varied, based oncamera quality, flight duration (how long it can be in the air), elevation, GPS, battery life and other technical specifications. Moreover, a drone model should go well with the requirement of your project. For example, a drone with low quality won’t be suitable if you are looking for crystal clear HD shoots.Plus, cost is the last thing you like to ask about. In Singapore, drone can cost you anywhere between SGD 109 and SGD 3000 based on its technical specifications.

Therefore, you should abide by the laws to avoid penalty and above all harming others.

  • Do not fly within 5 km of military airbase, or any airport
  • Do not drop anything from your drone
  • Do not fly over crowds or moving vehicles
  • Don’t fly higher than 200 meters
  • Don’t fly a drone that is heavier than 7 kg without permit

So you must have understood how drone can help you get amazing captures from any viewpoint. Needless to say it would be pure fun and thrilling as well. Like we said, you have to be abiding by the laws regarding drone usage in the country.

Flipped Classroom- A Revolution In Singapore Education System

In my last blog post, we have discussed the Negative Effects of Technology on Children & How to Prevent That and today we will talk about “Flipped Classroom” which is really an interesting concept for education system in Singapore.

After three continuous lectures, attending the fourth one with half-opened eyes, struggling to fit it in the mind but all the words of teacher end up falling on the ground after hitting the closed door of mind, thereby turning an informative lecture into a worthless lecture.

With advancement in technology and vast access to internet in Singapore, the model of education is changing its shape positively, affecting students, parents and teachers in a good manner.

Lots of efforts are being utilized in bringing changes in education system of Singapore with following motives in mind:

  • F– Fun-filled, informative lectures
  • L– Leverage technology
  • I– Increase student engagement
  • P– Provide opportunities for active learning in classroom
  • P– Prioritize practical application over theory

The concept of Flipped Classroom is gaining popularity and is being welcomed with open arms across the country. The National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University are universities that have embraced the idea of flipped-classroom learning.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU), in 2015 made an announcement to spend $75 million to implement the flipped classroom model for half of its courses.

What is Flipped-Classroom Learning?

‘Aria, a restaurant owner at Singapore, felt uncomfortable and bit weird when her child returned from school and asked to watch a video online before going to the school next day. Aria got worried of her daughter and next day went to school with her to meet her teacher. Her teacher then explained the concept of flipped classroom which satisfied all the queries floating in her mind.’

Just reverse the traditional order of the classroom events of Singapore and you will get a new model named Flipped Classroom. The model is represented by a 30-to-70% ratio of online to face-to-face learning.

Students learn the content by viewing the lecture materials online in form of video lectures and classroom time is spent applying the theoretical content practically, turning a classroom into a homework arena where interactive discussions and collaborative work is performed under the guidance of teacher.

Although Flipped Classroom learning is not a new concept but it is gaining popularity since recent past and it can be evident from the below picture:

Benefits of Flipped Classroom Learning for Singaporean Student

1) More Efficient for Teachers, Hence More Efficient for Students too…

The only drawback of flipped classroom learning is that it requires an initial investment of hard-work from the teachers. The seeds of that hard-work then get watered by output of students, thereby delivering fruitful scores. This is the reason that 96% of teachers who have flipped a lesson would recommend that method to others and 3 in 5 teachers have already flipped their classrooms or are planning to do so.

Teachers are required to put an effort in creating a video and hence setting up a flipped classroom. But this little effort can ultimately save a lot of time in future as there can be an easy transfer of recorded lessons and collected resources to other classes.

Moreover, instead of repeating the lecture for the absent students, teachers in Singapore can go ahead with the next lecture as the missed material is already available online.

2) Control Of Learning Lies Under Ambit Of Students…

All students are different and are gifted with different skill levels and it becomes hard for some students to understand the concept in face-to-face classroom. On the other hand, in the flipped classroom model, where 30% of the student learning take place online, an ideal learning environment is established which allow the students to absorb the information at their own pace.

Students get a chance to go through the passage again or re-watch a video lecture to gain the proper understanding of the content which empowers them to think critically, eventually improving their learning retention and promoting classroom interaction. 9 out of 10 teachers noticed a positive change in student engagement since flipping their classroom.

3) Most Struggling Students Get More Attention

As struggling students, great performers, introverted kids and extroverted students require teacher’s attention differently, the teachers get freedom to decide upon how much time need to be invested with each student.

Since most of the retaining and content absorbing part is to be done in home in this learning model, Singaporean teachers can dedicatedly work on weaker areas of struggling students, providing them individual time.

At Villanova, Weinstein helped lead a pilot program for flipping engineering courses and it was found that the result was more than 10 percent higher than in a traditional classroom (the difference between a D+ and a C) and more than 3 percent higher for the class as a whole (moving from a C+ to a B-).

The popularity of flipped classroom, also known as the inverted classroom is increasing at rapid pace and more and more of educators in Singapore have begin to experiment with this new way of teaching. The concept of flipped classroom can be implemented using various tools and even Google has backed up this concept by gifting all the teachers with software named Google Classroom.

Please do share your thoughts over this new concept in Education System.
